Net price vs tuition vs total cost

Where it is usually cheapest

Public schools have the lowest net prices: the median is $8,873 a year at public schools, versus $22,448 at private nonprofits and $21,045 at private for-profit schools (median across schools that report net price). Many offer the same certificate fields (welding, HVAC, electrician, medical assistant) as private career schools. Registered apprenticeships can pay you while you train. Always compare cost with graduate earnings and debt, and check red flags before signing.

How to compare two schools

  1. Find each school page and note average net price, completion rate and graduate earnings.
  2. Use the school's own net price calculator (linked on each school page).
  3. Ask for an itemized total including tools and exam fees.
  4. Check accreditation and whether credits transfer.
